Blackthorn, also known as The Mother of the Woods and the keeper of secrets, was a favoured plant of Lady Anne. But what secrets were kept and what pacts were completed near the barbed thorns of this formidable tree.

Hidden away in the eaves of the house, the Scorched Sanctum was one of only 3 rooms to survive on this level after the house was remodelled in the late 20s. If you look closely, you may see that beams of the room show evidence of scorching believed to be protective ‘Witch Marks’.

An elegant room with a four poster bed named for the bramble which adorns it’s ceiling.
Brambles - tasty to eat before the turn of the year when they are said to turn bitter and become cursed. Or perhaps it is because it is said that a demon can not help but count the berries and thorns of the bramble which will occupy them all night and keep the inhabitant safe.

Tucked away in the eaves, this is one of only three remaining rooms at the top of the house after it fell into disrepair in the 18th century.

Symbol of heraldry, the quatrefoil is prevalent in this beautiful first floor room. It’s worth noting that the symbols here are barbed quatrefoils, seemingly less like the lucky four-leaf clover and more a nod towards the dangers of thorns.
Snug on the second floor and accessed by the winding stair, Otter’s Holt is a lovely room, with an otter constantly in residence.
It shares a bathroom with Mallard’s Nest.

The lily - elegant plant with beautiful blooms. Every culture has myths of the lily. It blooms all year round, never becoming dormant. A symbol of strength and beauty, yet still so closely associated with death.

Situated on the first floor, next to the library, Sub Rosa is actually two joined rooms for up to 4 guests. The main room has a double bed and the adjoining room, which is over the porch with excellent views of the comings and goings, has a pair of twin beds.
